RENAM CANZI
The Judges 2012
SELF REFLECTION
When I got the material I should mate with mine, I was a little worried about having to change the video content because at first I did not see many possibilities, but then I started to formulate some strategies that could perhaps not completely change the direction of the video but definitely give a new dimension to what I was trying to project, basically the material of my colleague offered much "drama" and "decontrol" to the concept that I was trying to develop since the editing process, I even think the new title of the piece reflects this; The Judges (the former was Yellow Boys) is more about a possible backlash on the merger of two male characters when construed as relationship, and I believe that the material develops Amber in my video "repressive actions of society" as an example when the trash in the bathroom (feeling like garbage) and the door closing at the end (denial of opportunity.)
On the challenges I faced in cross cutting, the biggest one was the amount of scenes rather limited, the work of Amber offered me a point of view quite distant from the material that I had so I decided to use that as an advantage while cruising with my shots. The material was very different, because she tried to shoot her free hand without a tripod and contained some scenes in vertical format (which I chose not to use in my video) and all that material offered some freedom of expression which I found very appropriate when crossed with my footage with higher stiffness, I just wish I had more of this stuff to work.
What I learned from this experience? Actually there are many things like, for example, record the shot without building a concept, learn how to join the sequences in video editing and cross cutting, be able to understand the strengths of the material related to the colleague when their own material. Another very strong point is to realize the power of the soundtrack. Today (10/11/12) even after the presentation of the video in class I added a background noise throughout the video and I was extremely pleased with the result, even when I thought I had no more to the overall process of editing video.
